How this tool works

A cockpit rig has one job, staying rigid under the forces your wheel base and pedals produce, so the first question is torque. Under 8 Nm a wheel stand or a light tube frame holds; between 8 and 15 Nm an aluminum profile or a heavy-gauge tube rig keeps the wheel from flexing; above 15 Nm profile becomes the sensible default. What you race sets the seating position and the mounting angles, since a formula rig and a rally rig ask for different pedal and wheel geometry.

Space decides the footprint and whether a folding or compact rig is worth its compromises, and pedal firmness decides the deck. Load cell and hydraulic pedals push hard enough to flex a light pedal tray, so the profile calls for a reinforced deck when you pick them. Reading the result

How to read your result

Frame type is the decision that costs the most to get wrong, because a flexing rig makes an expensive wheel base feel cheap. Match that line first and be honest about future torque; rigs are bought once and wheel bases upgrade.

Footprint and mounting tell you what will actually fit and what hardware the rig needs to bolt to, such as a front-mount wheel plate or side mounts for a specific base. If a rig you like needs an adapter for your base, count the adapter in the price.

Questions people ask

Do I need aluminum profile?+

Above about 15 Nm, or with load cell pedals, profile is the safe choice because it does not flex and can be reconfigured forever. Below that, a quality steel tube rig is rigid enough and looks tidier.

Will a wheel stand work with direct drive?+

With an entry direct-drive base under 8 Nm, a heavy wheel stand can work if the pedals are braced against a wall or the stand. Anything stronger will walk across the floor or flex under braking.

Formula or GT seating position?+

GT if you race a bit of everything; the upright position suits most cars and is easier on the back. A formula position with feet raised is only worth building if you race open-wheel most of the time.

How much room does a rig need?+

Around 1.5 by 0.7 meters for a compact rig, more for profile with a triple-monitor stand. Measure with the seat slid back to your driving position, not to its shortest setting.
